What is Couples Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

The Couples CBT Process

  • Completing a joint assessment of the underlying relationship problems.
  • Identifying and committing to shared goals and values to underpin future relationship changes.
  • Using the couples CBT model to work on the connections between external factors, triggers unhelpful thinking and behavioural patterns and emotional distress.
  • Conducting behavioural experiments to test and alter unhelpful patterns of behaviour.
  • Practising new communication and emotional reciprocity techniques to improve the conduct and tone of the relationship.
  • Agreeing and committing to a new relationship "contract" to embed new principles and standards of behaviour to provide continuity following couples therapy sessions.

Couples Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a structured and practical approach to resolving problems and managing relationship conflict. Unlike other forms of couples therapy, CBT for couples focuses on identifying, mapping, understanding, and changing unhelpful or destructive patterns of behaviour that maintain distress, communication problems, interpersonal conflict and dissatisfaction in relationships. Many people turn to couples CBT following unsuccessful or unhelpful experiences with couples counselling. This is because CBT provides a tangible and concrete approach to taking practical steps to resolve the difficulties that place relationships at risk.

If you work with our couples CBT therapists, you will be asked to commit to specific ground rules for improving behaviour, to learn new communication skills and to practice managing healthy relationship boundaries and accountabilities.

The Couples Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Process typically involves the following steps:.
